There are many reasons why people start their own makeup business. Whatever your motivations are, we’re sure you’re going to nail it! But even if you have all the technical skills and makeup artistry certifications in the world, it’s still terrifying to take that leap of faith!
Sometimes you just need one more person to reassure you that you’re making the right choice. And we’re here to be that voice! If you can relate to the points below, it might finally be time to put your fears aside and start your own business.
So what are these “signs”? Keep reading to find out!
Sign 1: You hate your boss
Don’t worry, we didn’t hear it from you. Your reputation is safe! But we both know your boss is terrible. She has let her title go straight to her head! She’s not good to her employees and, quite frankly, her customers.
The great thing about makeup artistry is that you don’t need to work for someone else! You can easily be your own boss. And if you’ve built up a great reputation with your clients, they’ll probably follow you to your new business. Take matters into your own hands and start seeing yourself as the boss—you look pretty great in that power suit, anyway!
Sign 2: You think you can do it better
We started off with the most negative item on the list, but it’s not always black and white. You don’t have to hate your current working situation to start your own makeup business. You might even love your boss—she is delightful to work for and does a good job… but you could do a great job. You might feel guilty leaving a situation where you’re treated really well, but don’t be!
Starting your own business is not a betrayal, it’s growth! Your company might be sad to see you go, but they’re probably expecting it. There often comes a point in any makeup artist’s career when she tries to make it on her own. The decision is often connected to the next sign on our list!
Sign 3: You want more control or flexibility
When you work for someone else, you have to play by their rules. That means your hours, services, and clients are completely in their control. You might not be allowed to turn clients away, offer specific services, or determine your hours. If you’re looking to be the person who calls all the shots, working for yourself allows you to get final say!
If you have family or other commitments outside of work, this can be a huge asset. You’ll be able to set your hours and your vacation time. You no longer have to pass up on opportunities if you don’t want to. This isn’t to say that going it alone means not having to do much and never having to compromise. Starting a business is a lot of hard work! You have to make the hard decisions. But trust us, it’s totally worth it.
Sign 4: You don’t have lots of competition but you’re having trouble getting hired
If you live in New York, you won’t have this problem! But if you live somewhere a little more remote, there may not be many makeup artists at all in your city. And those few existing makeup companies artists may not have room to add you to their business.
If you desperately want to work, but can’t get hired by someone else, make your own opportunities! You won’t have to compete as hard for clients like you would in a big city. You’ll won’t have to bid for clients in your town and you’ll be able to create a demand for your services! By starting your own makeup business, you won’t have to worry about looking for work because you will create it!
Investigate your local beauty industry. Are there many makeup artists close by? Is there a niche that isn’t being offered like airbrush makeup or global beauty artistry? Find the gap and fill it with your new business!
