Want in on some of the QC staff’s most cringe-worthy confessions? Read on! We’ll just try not to die from second-hand embarrassment….

Victoria: Epic egg fail

qc-staff-beauty-confessions-hair-mask A few years ago, I was growing out my hair and becoming increasingly frustrated with the slow process. I came across an article that recommended an egg yolk hair mask to promote hair growth, so I gathered the ingredients together, added in some yogurt and honey, and massaged the concoction into my hair in the shower. After waiting the recommended 15-20 minutes, I began to rinse the mixture out of my hair (while not realizing that the water was still hot). To my horror, I saw bits of cooked egg going down the drain and immediately switched to cold water to rinse out the remainder. Overall, the mask made my hair look healthier, feel softer, and my shower drain didn’t end up clogged from what was, essentially, scrambled eggs. The egg yolk hair mask was a success, but I’ll remember to switch to cold water next time!

Alison: Self-tan flop

qc-staff-beauty-confessions-reg-image Thanks to being a former beauty counter BA, I’ve managed to avoid any really horrible makeup don’ts for a while now. But the journey to knowing what beauty products to use hasn’t been an easy one. Nope. Like many other girls, I am sucker for the look of a tan. One time before a fancy wedding, I quickly applied a drugstore tanning lotion all over my legs, face, arms, and neck for a, you know, sophisticated look. There’s a reason why MUAs tell you to test patch a tanning product before you commit to a full application. Let’s just say that my orange skin made for a certain Oompa Loompa glow that still gives me nightmares. My tan developed alright. Right while I was sitting during the wedding vows. By the time I looked at myself in the mirror, my tan was horrifyingly uneven! Luckily people only look at wedding photos like once a year, right? (Update: I still love the look of a tan. But now I know which tanning products will actually work!!)

Chelsea: French de-frizzer

qc-staff-beauty-confessions-hair-de-frizzer I naturally have Farrah Fawcett-style hair, but not in a good way. No matter how many expensive smoothing products I splurge on, I still wind up with a mountain of frizz on top of my head. In fact, my friend once used a ruler to measure the width of my frizz … four whole inches. Fortunately I can work a lot of magic with a hair straightener. A few years ago, when I was backpacking Europe, my hair straightener broke after I plugged it into a converter in a French outlet. Desperate not to look like I had a bird’s nest on top of my head (especially in Paris), I panicked and used the liquid hand soap in the hostel to try and weigh down my hair. Not exactly Parisian-chic, but it worked really well! For the next few days, I used a variety of hostel hand creams and body lotions to de-frizz my hair. Eventually I splurged on an actual de-frizzing product, but I will still use a random cream or soap when I’m in a pinch.

Corina: Fresh fruit DIY

qc-staff-beauty-confessions-fruit-mask At one point or another, I’m sure everyone has heard of a “DIY!” and “organic!” way to treat our facial skin. My biggest problem is dealing with my acne and acne scars. I’ve read online that applying fruit on your skin can help with fading acne scars and/or reduce the production of excess oil. But no, I’m not talking about a nice recipe for a homemade organic mask, instead I’ve applied the fruit directly on my skin. I’ve rubbed cherry tomatoes cut in half, watermelon skin (cut, not bitten, watermelon rind!), and banana peels on my skin. I’ll leave the fruit juice on for around 15 mins before rinsing it off. I can’t really say whether or not they have worked for me, since I never stuck with the same treatment for long. The longest I’ve gone is with the banana peel- around 2 weeks- and I did see a slight improvement. Though let me tell you, rubbing banana on your face and letting it sit for 15 mins… creates an… interesting smell. Fruit rinds do contain a lot of antioxidants and nutrients though, and many people swear that it works. Perhaps it’s time for me to start experimenting with fruits again!
