Start The Career of Your Dreams This Upcoming Fall!

Fall is quickly approaching! This means back to school – and for many of us, back to work, instead of working from home. Returning to our normal (but busy) routines can be a big adjustment.

However, with autumn just around the corner, this can also be a great opportunity for you to make some much-needed change in your life, too! Specifically, you can use this new season as an opportunity to practice a bit of self-care and work towards the career of your dreams.

Here’s the good news: QC Makeup Academy can help you achieve this goal, all from the comfort of your own home!

Why should you enroll with QC Makeup Academy over other online makeup schools this fall? I’ve got 6 killer reasons, so let’s take at look at them together!

6 Reasons to Enroll with QC Makeup Academy

Reason #1: Total Flexibility = Less Stress

The great thing about taking a course with QC Makeup Academy – unlike attending other online or in-person schools – is that you really do have the freedom to customize your schedule!

With many of us returning to in-person jobs, having the freedom to learn at your own pace is invaluable. Since QC’s learning environment works around your availability (rather than the other way around), you can find time to study and build your skill-set whenever it’s convenient for you.

The best part? There are NO strict deadlines! Once you enroll, you have 2 full years to complete your course. However, during this time, when and how often you focus on your studies is entirely up to you. As a result, you’re granted a stress-free learning environment, which is proven to get you the most out of your education!

Fun Fact: Many of QC’s graduates have found that by devoting a mere 1-2 hours per week to their studies, they were able to graduate and earn their internationally-recognized certification(s) in as little as 2-6 months!

Reason #2: QC Makeup Academy is Affordable for ANY Budget

You might be wondering, “How much does QC Makeup Academy cost?”

Don’t worry, I’m covering this for you, too!

Course tuition varies, depending on which program you want to enroll in and where you live. That said, QC ensures that every course is fairly priced. While the tuition reflects the high quality of the training provided, they also don’t want their students to go broke in the process.

This is why – on top of their already affordable rates – they offer payment options that best suit your budget. When you enroll with QC, you have the option to either:

  1. Pay the full amount upfront, which will earn you a sweet little “pay in full” discount.
  2. Or pay a small deposit at the time of enrollment, followed by low monthly payments. Thanks to this option in particular, countless QC students on a tight budget have been able to pursue their makeup training without worrying about any financial burden.

Reason #3: Advanced, Thorough Education

I just so happen to be a graduate of QC Makeup Academy myself. For me, one of the most important takeaways was how thorough this school is in delivering a high-quality, advanced education. Something that separates this makeup academy from others is that they supply you with all of the tools you need to excel – and I don’t just mean makeup.

QC goes above and beyond other schools by providing instructional videos for each section of your course. Moreover, you’re given academic booklets (both digital and physical), as well as makeup products and/or tools that would be required for the training.

Additionally, you’re also assigned an instructor who’s a legitimate expert in the makeup and beauty world. This tutor is there to assist you and give comprehensive feedback on your assignments. Speaking from experience, I can assure you that your tutor feedback will be anything but generic!

When I was completing my own course, I found that the responses given to me where always exceptionally thorough, detailed, and mindful. QC Makeup Academy’s instructors truly take the time to review your work with a fine-tooth comb. This way, they can offer constructive feedback to help you grow and perfect your artistry.

Reason #4: Special FX and The Halloween Season

Not only does QC Makeup Academy offer beauty makeup certifications – they also offer a Special FX Makeup Course, too! This 4-unit certification program delves into makeup for theater, fantasy, gore, and classic SFX looks. What better time to become a master of special effects makeup than for the upcoming Halloween season?

Obtaining an International Special FX Makeup Professional (ISMP) certification with QC Makeup Academy is a great asset to add to your resume. Firstly, because it’ll help you land more clients for the upcoming fall season. Secondly, because having this training will open up SO many career opportunities and paths for you.

For example, it’ll make you more marketable to work as a makeup artist for haunted houses. Additionally, it’ll help you network with photographers for a variety of autumn-themed shoots. Not to mention, SFX training can get your foot in the door for movies, television shows, and live theater gigs!

Did you know that my SFX makeup knowledge has helped ME land a sweet seasonal job for a haunted house? Read my full story here!

Reason #5: QC Makeup Academy Will Get You Certified in Time for The Wedding Season Craze

For MUAs who specialize in bridal makeup, the 2021 wedding season has been a nonstop whirlwind! Even though we’re all still in the midst of a global pandemic, life is beginning to open up again. As a result, weddings that were once put on pause are now in full effect.

From my own personal experience, I can attest to the wedding craziness. I’m already booking bridal parties well into 2022! So, believe me when I tell you that NOW is the optimal time for you to maximize the upcoming fall season by gaining a professional certification that’ll really impact your business.

Unlike other makeup schools, QC Makeup Academy offers all sorts of certifications that can take your bridal services to the next level. For starters, they offer an entire course devoted to airbrushing (which has become extremely popular in the bridal industry).

Furthermore, QC also offers a Skincare Course, Hair Styling Essentials Course, Global Beauty Workshop, and so much more! Their most popular program, the Master Makeup Artistry Course, also focuses on bridal applications. You can then further this knowledge through the Pro Makeup Workshop, which explores advanced bridal makeup artistry.

In a nutshell: getting certified NOW will mean you’ll be ready to book bridal clients this upcoming Fall. And when it comes to where you should obtain this training, QC Makeup Academy is the way to go. Their in-depth programs will truly help your artistry and career flourish!

How to Become a Professional Makeup Artist While Holding a Full-Time Job

By Career Advice, Education, From the Experts, Your Makeup Career 9 Comments

So, you want to pursue your dream and become a professional makeup artist. There’s just one problem: you already have a full-time job – and you can’t exactly quit. After all, you’ve got bills to pay! So, how can you do both?

Luckily, this goal is a LOT more achievable than you think!

Join QC Makeup Academy graduate, Gabrielle Rivera, as she breaks down how to become a makeup artist while holding a full-time job!

Debunking a Common Makeup Artist Misconception

When it comes to professional makeup artistry, there are a lot of misleading misconceptions. For example, many people incorrectly believe that being an MUA is just a “hobby”. But the fact is, becoming a pro makeup artist is a full-time job in and of itself!

Now, if you’re just dipping your toes into this industry, you might be thinking: “How am I supposed to do this professionally and commit this much time if I already have a full-time job?”

Don’t worry, you can still become a professional makeup artist! Yes, some beauty experts have decided to commit to their business full-time. However, just as many others choose to maintain their regular jobs and either do makeup on the side, or as a second (part-time) career. I’m here to give you some tips on how to manage becoming a professional makeup artist while holding a full-time job!

How to Become a Professional Makeup Artist While Working Full-Time

Drawing from personal experience, I’ve put together a list of 5 key tips to help you pursue your dreams of becoming a professional makeup artist. (Yes, even if you’re currently holding full-time employment.) If you give these 5 tips the proper focus and dedication, I guarantee you’ll be able to achieve your goal!

Tip #1: Planning, Scheduling, and Organization

I’m both a professional makeup artist and a full-time teacher. To me, the key to successfully balancing both priorities is all about organization! If you’re like me, you probably love writing in a physical planner. That being said, you may prefer a digital one instead. Either way, all I have to say is trust me – a planner is an important greatest asset to helping you manage both careers. It’ll quickly become your best friend!

When I plan my work weeks, I take into consideration both careers, as well as the workload each one requires per week. By doing this, I can stop and take a step back. As a result, I can ensure that I’m not overworking myself or overbooking my makeup artist business.

For example: I know that between April to August, my professional makeup artist business will be extremely busy. Mainly, because it’s prom and wedding season. So, I plan accordingly and pay extra attention to how many clients I can book realistically.

Pro Tip: Remember to Be Flexible!

Being flexible – while also setting realistic expectations – is going to be an important part of having a successful professional makeup artist career. You need to keep in mind the kind of workload you can actually manage. If you feel you’re biting off more than you can chew, don’t simply try to power through it. You won’t be benefiting anyone by spreading yourself too thin.

Remember that what matters most should always be the quality of your work, rather than the quantity of clients you schedule. Your clients will respect you for providing them with your best work – without having to rush their appointment or hurt their results in order to meet your next customer.

Tip #2: Become a Professional Makeup Artist By Networking

Holding a full-time job and becoming a professional makeup artist takes balance. Moreover, it requires a strong ability to network with others. When I first started out, I didn’t really value the power of networking… That is, until I saw what networking can really do!

When you learn to network with other professionals in the beauty industry, you’re opening the door to invaluable opportunities. Such opportunities could include gaining new clientele and securing more bookings – all through word of mouth! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve booked clients because my networked recommended me. I’ve also gained clients because fellow artists within my network needed extra help working large bridal parties, proms, and/or photoshoots!

Tip #3: Maintain Clear and Consistent Communication

Everyone says that communication is key. But from my experience, this is especially the case in our profession. If you want to know how to become a professional makeup artist, one of the first things to understand is that clear and consistent communication is critical!

If you have a full-time job but dream of working as an MUA, you really need to make sure that it’s easy for clients to contact you. Furthermore, you must always keep those lines of communication clear and consistent (to the best of your ability). You never want to lose out on a potential client because they weren’t sure how to contact you. Similarly, it’d be a shame to miss out on a golden opportunity because you missed their inquiry.

A way to combat this is to have a system in place that works the best for you. Many professional makeup artists will provide a business email for contact. Additionally, you can also have a contact link set up on your website that’ll directly send visits any customer inquiries. Regardless of the method that works best for you, ensure that it’s easily accessible to clients.

Tip #4: Remember to Practice Self-Care

Speaking from experience, trying to juggle a full-time job and a professional makeup artist career can be overwhelming at times. Your goal is to be able to maintain your full-time employment. However, you’re also driven to grow your own makeup business. As a result, your personal and/or mental health can unintentionally wind up taking a back seat.

Oftentimes, people believe that in order to be successful, you must wake up at the crack of dawn, work yourself to the bone, and even limit sleep in order to be more productive. Well, I’m here to tell you that those beliefs couldn’t be further from the truth!

A phrase I often tell my students is, “Work smarter, not harder.” Being successful is not contingent on working long hours, depriving yourself of sleep, or a lack of proper nutrition. In fact, it’s actually quite the opposite! When you feel your best, you’ll work and produce your best.

So, make sure to give yourself days off to relax, unwind, and recharge. Remember to practice self-care regularly and you’ll notice how it benefits yourself and your business!

Tip #5: Become a Professional Makeup Artist By Getting Properly Educated

Ultimately, it all boils down to this: if you want to know how to become a professional makeup artist, the #1 answer I can give you is to get reputable training. This is especially true if you’re holding a full-time job. After all, you’re already busy as it is. As such, it can become all too easy to fall behind on the latest beauty trends.

When you enroll in a professional certification course, however, you’ll not only stay current on these game-changing trends – you’ll learn how to combine them with core techniques, so you can apply them correctly.

Knowing trends is one simple step that can help bring you a LOT of new clientele. For instance, if you’re an artist in the world of bridal makeup, you’ll quickly see the trends in wedding makeup. The more you educate and practice both the classic and current trends, the more clientele you can attract and book for your business.

Furthermore, it’s imperative that you continuously educate yourself and better your craft. I suggest taking seminars, online classes, one-on-one lessons, business webinars… Basically, any learning opportunity you can get your hands on!

The more knowledgeable you become about skincare, makeup products, applications, and styles, the easier it’ll be for you to secure more clients, network, and collaborate with others. This will also allow you the opportunity to increase your prices as your knowledge base and experience grows!

A great way to support your professional makeup career while holding a full-time job is to sign up for one of QC Makeup Academy’s self-paced, online certification courses. As a QC graduate myself, I cannot recommend them highly enough!

3 Ways Online Makeup Classes are The Same as In-Person Ones (and 3 Ways They’re BETTER)

By About the School, Education, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Not sure whether you should enroll in online makeup classes or brick-and-mortar ones? Certified MUA, Gabrielle Rivera, reveals 3 similarities that online training has with in-person training – as well as 3 reasons why online makeup courses are superior!

Online Makeup Classes vs. In-Person Makeup Classes: 3 Things They Have in Common

1 – Educator Feedback

When I first looked into QC Makeup Academy, my biggest concern was that I wouldn’t be in the same room as my instructor. After all, how can you learn how to do makeup properly, and master the necessary skills, if you’re not physically with your tutor?

I quickly discovered, however, that QC Makeup Academy’s remote learning environment has this covered! In fact, their online makeup classes provide expert and experienced educator feedback on EVERY assignment… Just like in-person makeup classes would!

Just like in a brick-and-mortar setting, your QC instructor will review and critique your work throughout the entire process. Moreover, they’ll provide detailed feedback that is specific to the strengths you’ve shown in your assignments. At the same time, they’ll also address any areas that need improvement, as well as give feedback on how to master those specific skills and/or applications. As a result, your tutor’s audio feedback will help you pinpoint exactly where you need to grow and how you can successfully achieve this!

Having this level of instructor feedback is incredibly vital to your success as a student, because it supports your understanding of the concepts being modeled. I speak from experience! My QC Makeup Academy tutor, Pat Armstrong, would provide specific and thorough feedback on every aspect of my assignments. She also offered suggestions on areas I should work on, as well as provided references in the textbooks and/or instructional videos that I could use for additional support.

2 – You Receive a Makeup Kit and Course Supplies

It’s worth pointing out that not all online makeup classes will provide you with a makeup kit. Similarly, not all online schools will send you a physical copy of your course supplies and materials. But QC Makeup Academy certainly does!

This is just another way that QC’s online learning environment is similar to what you’d experience in a brick-and-mortar course. In both settings, you’re provided with your very own makeup kit to aid you in your training. Furthermore, you receive a physical copy of your textbooks (and any other necessary supplies) to help you successfully complete your course.

Having these materials provided to you helps alleviate the pressure of needing to build your makeup kit and supplies from scratch. As such, you can begin your education as soon as you’ve enrolled!

3 – The Methodology is the Same in Online Makeup Classes and Brick-and-Mortar Ones

Fun fact: QC Makeup Academy executive makeup artist and celebrity MUA, Nathan Johnson, used to work as a brick-and-mortar instructor before teaching online makeup classes. According to him, the methodology behind the education process is exactly the same – regardless of the medium!

Wherever I am teaching, my methodology is the same ... This teaching process is the same, whether the learning is happening in-person or from behind a computer screen.

Nathan JohnsonQC Makeup Academy executive makeup instructor and celebrity MUA

I’m a makeup artist who has taken both in-person and online makeup training. As such, I can say with complete confidence that the methodology taught in both settings is the exact same. With in-person classes, your instructor will model and verbally walk you through each step. They’ll explain why they are approaching each technique in a specific way. Similarly, this is also true for online makeup classes!

With QC Makeup Academy, the instructors record themselves modeling each skill and technique. This is then demonstrated to you through your instructional videos. Plus, they verbally walk through their hows and whys! For instance, say you want to learn how to create a smoky eye. The techniques for achieving this look would be the same, whether it’s taught to you in-person or online. So long as the approach is the same (and it is), you’ll be able to achieve the same results.

3 Ways Online Makeup Classes Are Better Than In-Person Ones

You might be thinking, “Well, I’m still unsure. In-person learning seems to have more benefits.”

Does it, thought? You might be surprised to learn that online makeup classes actually offer INCREDIBLE benefits that you’d never be able to find in a physical learning environment!

Here are just 3 reasons why I strongly believe online makeup classes can be MORE beneficial than in-person classes!

Woman holding up calendar and giving ok sign with hand

1 – You Can Learn at Your Own Pace!

Like many students, you might be considering taking makeup classes online because you work a full-time job. Maybe you’re a full-time, stay-at-home parent. Or perhaps you’d just prefer not to be in a physical classroom environment during COVID.

Either way, in-person classes probably won’t be able to cater to your needs. This is because they tend to run on a set, strict schedule. Moreover, you have to travel to them and make their timeframes work for your schedule – regardless of how hectic your life is.

On the other hand, online makeup classes allow you to have a flexible schedule! You can learn at your own pace, without strict deadlines or the fear of ‘failing’ if you don’t turn in an assignment by a given due date. QC Makeup Academy’s online learning environment puts YOUR needs first! You can complete your coursework and assignments whenever works best for you. There are no deadlines or set schedules to follow! So long as you complete your program within the 2-year period, that’s all that matters. Thus, you can take as much or as little of that time as you need.

On top of this, because you have the option to learn at your own pace, you can take the time you need to truly feel proud of the work you submit!

2 – Online Makeup Classes Offer a LOT More Practice Time!

They always say, “Practice makes perfect.” However, with in-person classes, you’re actually limited on the practice time you’re allotted before an instructor reviews and critiques your work.

With in-person classes, the instructor will teach and model the application. After that, students are asked to practice on their own model that same day. In this blog article, QC Makeup Academy’s Nathan Johnson shared his own experiences working at a brick-and-mortar school. This thought in particular really resonated with me:

You hear your lesson from your teacher once, and you only get to practice it for a few minutes. In those few minutes, you either get it or you don’t, and everyone else moves on. Yes, you can practice when you get home - but without the visual demo, will you be able to remember what the proper technique is?

Nathan JohnsonQC Makeup Academy executive makeup instructor and celebrity MUA

Online makeup classes, on the other hand, permit you the time to actually practice the skills taught in each unit. Furthermore, you can continue practicing as much as you need before turning in your work. This way, you can ensure that you’re mastering the skill properly. This practice time will make all the difference between just applying makeup and fine-tuning the application process.

Woman watching makeup tutorial on laptop while sitting on floor

3 – You Can Refer Back to Your Course Materials as Much as You Need!

In my personal experience, one of the most VALUABLE benefits of online makeup classes is the video instruction. Namely, because with that comes the ability to play the videos back! When becoming a professional makeup artist, video instruction can be an essential component to your growing skill-set. You’re able to watch, pause, rewind, and practice alongside the instructor – as many times as you want/need.

In a physical class, you can run into difficulty remembering everything the instructor said. You might not recall each step of the application. As a result, this can make your at-home practice tough, since you won’t remember how to recreate the look(s) or apply the product(s) accurately. Luckily, online makeup training won’t pose this issue!

This is also an important element because it can be easy to pick up incorrect makeup habits when trying to mimic your instructor’s work (without their supervision and feedback). Having instructional videos at your disposal takes away the “guesswork”. Instead, you’re able to re-watch their applications and techniques as many times as you need. This way, you’ll truly grasp the skills correctly!

Trust me when I say: the right online makeup classes will completely disprove the negative misconceptions people sometimes have about them. If you dream of working as a professional makeup artist and want to get properly trained, I highly recommend checking out QC Makeup Academy’s courses! You can also speak directly with QC’s Student Support Team to have all of your concerns and questions answered. 🙂

The 6 Best Ways to Market Your Makeup Portfolio

By Career Advice, From the Experts, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Want to know how to properly market your makeup portfolio? Professional MUA, Gabrielle Rivera, reveals 6 of the best ways to get it seen by the masses!

Being a Makeup Artist in the 21st Century

As a professional makeup artist, you’ll quickly realize how saturated this career field can be. At the beginning of your career, you might feel that it’s difficult to stand out above the rest. One of the single greatest things you can do to get your name out there and shine is to not only have a solid makeup portfolio – but know how to market it correctly.

So, I’m going to share with you today 6 ways to market your makeup portfolio online. In my opinion, these 6 methods are the best! If maximized properly, they’ll help you grow your business, gain clientele, and open all sorts of doors for networking!

makeup artist and hair stylist working on model for photoshoot

6 Ways You Should Market Your Makeup Portfolio

1. Website vs. Social Media

When building your business, it’s always important to remember that you are a professional. It’s easy for many to get swept away by social media and the audience that “influencers” receive.

Yes, having a following on social media platforms can benefit your business because it can help you gain exposure. But at the same time, you’ll also be limiting potential clientele by only having your business and/or makeup portfolio on social media.

As an industry professional, if you want others to take you and your business seriously, using only social media is NOT be the way to go. Social media is an outlet that is extremely saturated with other makeup artists. These makeup artists are all promoting their work, same as you. However, when clients see that you have a social media presence AS WELL AS a professional website and makeup portfolio, they’ll be all the more inclined to work with you.

Having a professional website that showcases your portfolio will help put you above the rest because it’ll show your dedication and overall professionalism.

2. Know Your Brand

When it comes to marketing your makeup portfolio, another key tip is to seriously plan out the type of branding you envision for your business and work. Branding allows potential clients to visually understand your style. Your brand will give people a sense of who you are as a creator, an artist, and a professional.

When you carefully plan out the branding of your business and makeup portfolio, you are telling the world what it is you offer. If you’re not sure how to brand your business, think about your logo, color scheme(s), and the overall style of makeup/photography that will best suit you.

building your business's brand concept

3. Know Your “Why”

Showcasing your skills and previous work is monumental when developing your makeup portfolio. Just keep in mind that your portfolio should also allow potential clients the chance to better get to know YOU, too!

Building a rapport with people is a major part of gaining loyal, long-term clients. Moreover, building rapport is critical for your networking opportunities. When building your website, make sure to create an eye-catching Homepage. Take it one step further by creating an About Me section that lets clients feel like they’re getting a glimpse into your life – and into who you are as a person.

In this industry, you’ll quickly find that most clients want to know your WHY. For example, why did you choose this field, and what drives you to be your very best? Why are you passionate about this line of work?

Clients want to know that to you, it’s about more than just making money. They want to book with someone who will provide them with some type of personal experience. Marketing a successful makeup portfolio is all about creating a lasting impression for clients… and a simple way to do this is by letting them get to know you.

4. Maximize Your Makeup Portfolio By Showcasing Your BEST Work

When I think about what makes a successful makeup portfolio, I try to put myself in the shoes of the customer. As a prospective client, I would want to see clean work, the versatility of skill or style, and clear, crisp images.

A big part of marketing your portfolio comes down to your images. There’s a lot to be said about the artists who go above and beyond; taking the time to ensure that the application, lighting, and quality of their photos always showcase their best work.

Obviously, high-quality photos are a MUST for any professional makeup portfolio. But there’s a lot more to it than just that! The organization and presentation of your photos can also help to make your portfolio successful, too. As you’re developing your own portfolio, ask yourself: do you prefer the “less is more” approach? Or do you prefer to provide more samples so that clients can see a wider range of your work?

5. Pair Your Makeup Portfolio with Testimonials on Your Website

As I mentioned earlier, social media is undoubtedly a great tool to help your business gain exposure. But if you want to set yourself apart from other artists on social media, include a Testimonials section on your professional website or makeup portfolio!

Just like with restaurants or movies, potential customers will often seek out reviews to get a better idea of your business – before they take the leap and book with you. Reviews will help them make their decision about you. So, make sure to give past clients the opportunity to write a testimonial about their experience with you! Furthermore, showcase these raving reviews directly on your website. As a result, potential clients will have a better understanding of what their own experience will be if they work with you.

In my experience, reviews are a great way to help alleviate any reservations a client might have about booking with your business. When they see how many people have had great experiences with you, it’ll reassure new clients that you truly are the best fit for their needs!

6. Make Yourself Accessible

My last tip to help you market your makeup portfolio is to make it easy for clients to contact you! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard clients complain that they didn’t know how to contact an MUA, or had trouble finding their contact information.

This doesn’t need to be complicated either. On your website, all you need to do is clearly list your:

  • Full name
  • Email
  • Business address
  • Phone number

Making this information public and easy to find will really go a long way! You don’t want clients to have a difficult time when navigating your makeup portfolio and/or website. You especially don’t want them to struggle with finding your contact information. If they do, it’ll drastically lower the chances of them wanting to book with you.

Photo portrait of funky young woman smiling cheerful showing call me sign winking blinking isolated on pastel purple color background

Likewise, on every platform you’re using, make sure to indicate the easiest or preferred way for client communication. This will help:

  • Ensure that you don’t miss any potential clients who are trying to reach out to you;
  • Keep your client contacts organized and in one place;
  • Keep a consistent and reliable source of contact with your client.

I guarantee that if you apply these 6 tips, you’ll be able to market your makeup portfolio successfully!

6 Ways to Make the Best Impression During Makeup Artist Jobs

By Career Advice, From the Experts, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Gabrielle Rivera is a QC Makeup Academy graduate and professional makeup artist. To see more of her work, visit her Instagram here. Today, Gabrielle discusses her Top 6 tips for making the best possible impression while working with others during makeup artist jobs.

makeup artist jobs article, mar 30 2021, gabrielle rivera headshot

Interviews, demos, and working on the job should all be seen as an opportunity to showcase your talents. After all, these experiences will give others the chance to see why you would be an asset to them. A quote that I often think about when going to interviews – and one that should become a positive affirmation for all – is this:

No one is you and that is your power.

Dave Grohl

With these words in mind, here are my Top 6 recommendations to help you make the best impression during all makeup artist jobs…

Makeup Artist Jobs: 6 Ways to Make the Best Impression

1. Be Yourself

When going on an interview or working on makeup artist jobs, my first piece of advice is to truly be yourself. Something important that I’ve learned is that, yes, your skills and credentials matter. However, what people really want is to see who you are. Interviews and/or working in the field can be nerve-wracking, especially for beginners. Just know that you’ve got this!

Try to stay calm and collected. This way, they can see your personality. It’s important for collaborators, employers, and clients alike to see your natural personality. After all, this can also be the key that helps open doors for future makeup artist jobs! So, show them that you’re focused and independent, while also being a team player.

Remember: even in the world of makeup, you will have to work and collaborate with many others. Understandably, this is something that others will want to know that you can handle seamlessly.

2. Remember Your Training

Look, you’re ready for this moment! You’ve put in the time and training. You have a reputable certification to your name. When in doubt, always remember the basics and foundations of makeup that you were taught in school.

During my first few makeup artist jobs, I was so focused on what I thought would impress others. As a result, I put way too much effort into discussing or only using prestigious-name brands.

Although your clientele might be impressed by your stock of Giorgio Armani or Charlotte Tilbury makeup, the employer mostly wants to know that you have the skills to create any look – regardless of the quality or brand of products.

The absolute BEST thing you can do for yourself is show them that you understand and can easily apply the foundations and basics of makeup. Moreover, you can do this on any client. If you can demonstrate that you have mastered the skills of a true artist, the employer is guaranteed to be impressed!

3. Be Flexible

Another key tip is to show your flexibility! When a potential employer or client is looking to hire a makeup artist, they want to know that you’re capable of thinking on your toes. As such, you’ll need to know how to be flexible with your application, product use, and overall craft.

Makeup products have many uses beyond their traditional function. Don’t be afraid to play around with this! For example, lipstick can also be used as cream blushes or eyeshadows. Being flexible with products helps to demonstrate your versatility and knowledge first-hand.

Moreover, this is especially important to showcase during an interview or makeup artist jobs. The reason? It’ll reassure the employer and/or client that you’re able to be flexible while working on clients – and also with others in the business.

4. Promote Your Versatility

We live in the age of technology. These days, many interviews, makeup demos, and even in-field work is done or showcased virtually. However, you can make yourself stand out of the crowd by having a physical portfolio that demonstrates your finest high-quality work, too!

Don’t let a potential job slip away because you relied solely on your Instagram (or other social media platforms) to promote your best work. Yes, the employer and/or client can view your social media pages. They can browse your website to see the work you’ve done. However, having a tangible portfolio that can be viewed on-hand will leave a lasting impression, right there in the moment.

Your makeup portfolio should contain high-quality photos that demonstrate your versatility as an artist. That being said, they should also show work that’s similar to the job in which you are applying.

5. Talk Through Your Process

When working on models or clients during makeup artist jobs, make sure that you aren’t quiet the entire time. Think of this as your time to show off your sparkling personality! Make the model or client feel comfortable in your hands by engaging in casual, friendly discussion.

Not only will talking with the model help you; it’ll also be a great way for you to show off your knowledge of the field. Instead of simply applying makeup and making generic conversation, why not explain why you are applying the product in certain areas? Enlighten and educate them by breaking down how each product should be properly used. You can even offer recommendations on what would be best for the model, based on their skin type or concerns!

By building this rapport with clients, you’ll leave a lasting impression. Plus, you’ll be opening the door for even more opportunities to work with them again in the future.

6. Get More Makeup Artist Jobs By Networking

My final tip that every makeup artist should always do is: network, network, network! Remember to keep that sparkling personality up and look for ways to connect with other hair stylists, makeup artists, photographers, and models! Working on the job is a great opportunity to share your business cards or social media with others. This way, you can build a professional working relationship with the people you’re interacting with.

Networking is ALWAYS going to benefit you as a makeup artist! Over time, you’ll build arsenal of colleagues that work in the business, as well as a long list of happy, repeat clients. As a result, the door for continuous collaboration will always remain open!

5 Special Effects Makeup Products to Ask Santa For!

By From the Experts, Makeup Reviews, Special Effects Makeup No Comments

Gabrielle Rivera is a QC Makeup Academy graduate, professional MUA, and special effects makeup expert. To see more of her work, visit her Instagram here

Christmas is the best time of year to ask Santa for the beauty products you absolutely MUST add to your makeup kit! If you’re interested in pursuing a career in special effects makeup, I’ve got 5 products for you to add to your wish list today.

The best part? They can all be used whether you’re a beginner or experienced makeup artist, and I guarantee that they’ll help take your creations to the next level!

5 Special Effects Makeup Products You Need!

Teeth are a subtle detail that MUAs can potentially overlook when creating special effects makeup looks. But the teeth are very important!

Imagine that you’ve just spent hours creating a detailed gore look or a mythical creature. Once you’re finished and your model is ready to have their photo taken, they smile… and show off a mouth of pearly whites! While they may seem inconsequential, teeth play a major role in creating a finished look. They have a huge impact on the final product of your design.

So, ask Santa to bring you a Tooth Lacquer palette! This palette will help you achieve the most realistic special effects makeup for your characters (and their chompers). My favorite brand is the Fleet Street Tooth Lacquer palette because it comes with a variety of grossly-pigmented paints! With this palette, I have brought a Leprechaun to life. Not to mention, these lacquers are the perfect finish to any rotting zombie look.

(Hint hint, for those enrolled in QC Makeup Academy’s Special FX Makeup Course!)

2. Alcohol-Activated Paints

Another great gift to ask for this holiday season are alcohol-activated paints! What I love most about these types of paints is that they’re long-lasting. They’re also exceptional at creating the most life-like special effects makeup.

One of my favorite alcohol-activated paint brands is the Skin Illustrator palettes. There are over 20 unique Skin Illustrator palettes designed to help artists achieve specific looks. However, a staple in every SFX artist’s kit should be the FX palette. This palette has all of the tones needed to create bruising, cuts, veins, and the illusion of decay.

Some of my other favorite Skin Illustrator palettes are the Grunge and Necromania palettes. They both have a wide range of colors that can be used to create a variety of special effects makeup looks. Another brand of  alcohol-activated paints that you DEFINITELY need to ask Santa for are the ProAiir liquid paints used for airbrushing!

Both of the above brands are waterproof and ensure long-lasting results for you and your clients.

Another staple that I always have in my SFX kit are the 3rd Degree silicone modeling compounds. I’ve been using this brand for over three years now and I have never looked back!

The pros of using this compound include:

  • It’s easier to work with this product when compared to scar wax or other modeling compounds
  • It has a quick drying time
  • It allows you to create more realistic SFX textures in the skin

In the past, I’ve done a Freddy Kreuger SFX look. For it, I used 3d Degree in order to create the burn marks, cuts, gashes, and wounds that resemble flaps of skin, holes, and more! Another great advantage of using this product is that you can add liquid paints in order to create custom colors. This is because the compound cures, which helps to create the most realistic results.

4. Pros-Aide Adhesive and Cream

Pros-Aide Adhesive is a professional adhesive similar to liquid latex. For beginners, I highly recommend using regular liquid latex first. This way, you can become familiar with working with latex before moving onto any costlier products (as the Pros-Aide brand can get a bit expensive).

Pros-aide is a richer quality adhesive that can be used on prosthetics, or can be used in conjunction with cotton to build your own. I prefer this adhesive when working with prosthetics, as it allows for a smoother blend to the skin.

In addition to Pros-aide adhesive, a MUST-have to pair alongside it is Pros-Aide Cream. This cream adhesive is a thicker adhesive that’s meant to fill in the gaps or edges of prosthetics. The result is a truly seamless blend. That being said, this product can also be used to create scars or textures on the skin.

5. Airbrush Machine

The BEST gift you can ask Santa for this Christmas is an airbrush machine. Whether you specialize special effects makeup or regular makeup, trust me: an airbrush machine will elevate your game completely!

Not only do airbrush machines help deliver blended looks; they can save you time as well. Airbrush machines are a great way to lay down a base for your looks, on both small and larger-scale areas. With practice, airbrush machines can also be used to detail looks, and they’re phenomenal for painting over top of prosthetics!

The airbrush machine I use is the Master Airbrush Model TC-320. This airbrush machine is portable, compact, and gets the job done every time. With an airbrush machine, you can use water or alcohol-activated paints, as well as liquid foundation to create glamor looks.

If you ask Santa for nothing else this holiday season, I recommend asking for an airbrush machine. It’ll completely change your life!

Special Effects Makeup: Don’t Commit These 4 Sins!

By From the Experts, Makeup Tips and Tricks No Comments

Gabrielle Rivera is a QC Makeup Academy graduate and professional makeup artist. To see more of her work, visit her Instagram here. Today, Gabrielle reveals 4 mistakes you should never make with special effects makeup!

Special effects makeup is a great opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone, try new techniques, and tap into your creativity. Although special effects makeup can involve creating a look that isn’t perfectly blended or traditionally “pretty”, there are still some makeup sins you DON’T want to commit!

4 Special Effects Makeup Sins You Shouldn’t Commit

sfx character makeup

1. Don’t Overuse Special Effects Makeup Looks

Personally, I enjoy creating over-the-top special effects makeup looks as much as the next artist. However, something I learned early on in my career is the importance of researching realistic images, in order to help me bring my vision to life.

While you might think that SFX looks need to be unrealistic or exaggerated, there are still guidelines you should consider when creating these looks. The best thing you can do as an artist is to research photos of real bruises, cuts, scrapes, and any type of wound you wish to create.

Looking at realistic photos will help you to better design and color your special effects looks.

2. Don’t Overuse (and Misuse) Fake Blood

Another sin I frequently see with special effects makeup is the overuse and misuse of fake blood. Although fake blood can tie an SFX look together and bring it to life, it can also take away from the look if not used properly.

Overusing fake blood is one mistake that I find extremely common. Sometimes, even when it comes to gore-inspired looks, less is more. Time and time again, I’ve seen content where an artist spends a lot of effort adding details to their looks – only for it to be covered up with blood.

Remember: adding blood should accent your design, not overpower it!

sfx makeup demon face with horns and peeling skin

Likewise, misusing fake blood can also quickly make a realistic design appear overtly fake. When designing a look, consider the optimal color and thickness of any fake blood you intend to use. It should closely resemble the wound or effect you are trying to create.

Pro Tip: To make a special effects makeup look more realistic, consider the direction that blood would flow from a wound, or how the blood would splatter. Don’t simply spray blood in every direction. In real life, this doesn’t happen NEARLY as much as you’d think.

3. Don’t Use Sharp or Dangerous Items

In this modern age of social media, artists do not always take the proper care when creating special effects makeup looks. Sometimes, the desire to create a look that will stand out above the rest overshadows the very real need to put your safety above all else.

This is a major mistake that can prove costly, should anything go wrong. Although creativity is always welcomed, it can be dangerous to improperly use materials when creating an SFX look!

For example, artists should not use real glass, nails, or other sharp objects to bring a design to life. If creating a look that contains normally sharp objects, you should file the tips of down and ensure they are properly covered. Likewise, artists should never use real glass or metal – especially near their eyes, nose, or mouth. Instead, use items made out of plastic or other pliable materials.

This is an important step that’s often overlooked. Yes, it can be more time-consuming to create objects safely, but it’s a critical step of the process. When special effects looks are created with dangerous objects, it can be unsafe for both you and the model. So, please remember that safety always comes first!

4. Don’t Forget to Blend Your Edges

Lastly, a small detail that can take your special effects makeup to the next level and help make it as realistic as possible is to blend your edges! It doesn’t matter if you’re using a premade prosthetic, scar wax, cotton and latex, or other compounds. Unblended edges can quickly diminish the effect of your design.

Blending the edges of your special effects makeup is such an important step in creating a realistic look! It provides a cohesive look from top to bottom. There are a few ways to help blend edges, depending on what product you’re using. Let’s take a look at a few of them…

Cotton and Latex

If you’re creating your own cotton and latex build-up, the easiest way to blend your edges into the rest of your look is to heavily saturate the cotton with latex. Once the cotton is heavily saturated, it changes the consistency. Thus, it’ll be easier to smooth and blend out.

special effects makeup burnt hand prosthetic

Prosthetics

Pre-made prosthetics will usually have thin edges. These are meant to help artists easily blend the prosthetic into the skin. However, depending on the quality of the prosthetics, this may not always be the case.

To avoid bulging edges, you can apply latex and cotton to the edges. This will help blend the prosthetic. Another option would be to use Pros-Aide cream, which is specifically designed to help fill in gaps or seams.

Scar Wax and Other Modeling Components

When using scar wax and or other modeling components, an easy way to blend the edges properly and seamlessly is to use any of the following products:

  • Vaseline
  • Lotion
  • An oil that helps “melt” the product into the skin

The best way to apply any of the above products would be to rub it onto the tips of your fingers and then carefully rub along the edges of your design.

Makeup Jobs: Working for a Haunted House

By From the Experts No Comments

Gabrielle Rivera is a QC Makeup Academy graduate and professional makeup artist. To see more of her work, visit her Instagram here. Today, Gabrielle gives us a behind-the-scenes look at one of her most recent makeup jobs!

The most important advice I can give to both novice and experienced makeup artists alike is to be open to new opportunities throughout their career. Sometimes, stepping outside of your comfort zone is the best way to find makeup jobs and book new clients.

If you’re like me – an MUA whose clientele mostly consists of bridal, special occasion, and/or photography makeup – and you’re looking to gain some experience, then this article is for you!

This Halloween season, I was hired as a makeup artist for a haunted house in my hometown. If you’re interested in delving into the world of special effects makeup, or simply wish to branch out and challenge yourself, then I strongly recommend this kind of opportunity.

If you’re now playing with the idea of providing makeup services for haunted houses in your own area, you’re in luck! I’ve got 4 tips to help you get started, so let’s dive right in!

makeup jobs - makeup artist applying fake blood to male actor's face

1 – Research Haunted Houses Close to You

Firstly, you’ll want to research into the haunted houses in your hometown and surrounding areas. This is a crucial step, especially for new makeup artists coming into the field of special effects makeup for the first time!

Sometimes, artists can feel intimidated by the idea of applying for makeup jobs that are different from what they’re used to. However, you might just be exactly what your local haunted houses are looking for! Many places like these are on the hunt for fresh eyes and new talent. If you’re someone who’s willing to learn and likes to collaborate with others, you’ve already got one foot in the door.

Applying to a haunted house that is close to you can be a great learning opportunity. It’ll give you a chance to network with other professionals in this field and gain hands-on experience. Also, remember that even as a newcomer in special effects makeup, you can still very easily apply the foundational knowledge you’ve learned from your professional training!

2 – Practice the Basics

When you’re first hired as a makeup artist for a haunted house, you may do what I did and run to Instagram or YouTube for inspiration and preparation. However, what you’ll quickly learn from working at a haunted house is that the looks you create need to be speedy, yet detailed.

As such, your best friend is going to be proper training from an industry expert. This is the single greatest way to master the basics, such as…

Good Old Cotton and Latex

You might already have experience using scar wax, third degree, or other compounds to create special effects makeup looks. However, most haunted houses actually use cotton and latex to create their effects. This is because this particular combination can be the most long-wearing. One of the best things you can do is practice creating different wounds, slashes, and zombie-like effects using these 2 simple items.

Basic Effects

Alongside cotton and latex, practice creating 3-D cuts, scrapes, veins, and bruises with regular cream and grease paints. As much as larger wounds and prosthetics can create a look, it’s the small details that make a look complete.

The basics are what will make your work stand out amongst the others. Use the actor’s natural creases, wrinkles, scars, and physical features (such as their bone structure) to accentuate the look you are creating!

makeup jobs - makeup artist creating fake wound on child's arm

3 – Creating Your Looks

Likewise, most haunted houses use airbrushing, as well as cream or grease paints. These will hold up the longest under all of the environmental conditions. For example, you need the actor’s makeup to last throughout the night and not smudge or run due to heat, sweat, and possible rain.

As a makeup artist, you also now need to practice creating looks on top of a mask. After all, you and your clients will be expected to follow health protocols for COVID-19 safety. (This is the case for all makeup jobs you take on for the time being.) So, think about how you can incorporate a mask into your haunted house looks.

When creating looks for your haunt, one of the most important things to keep in mind is that the looks should have high contrast. This way, they can be seen clearly in the dark and against the fog. Instead of worrying about each detail being perfectly blended like you would in beauty makeup, some of your looks should have harsh lines. That way, they’ll be most prominent in the dark.

Your base colors are generally going to be white, yellow, red, and black. You can use these colors to build depth on the skin. If your character is to appear frozen, for example, your base colors would be white, purple, and blue, with hints of red. Practicing how to apply these base colors will be key in creating quick yet realistic looks.

female client wearing goth makeup and fake contacts

4 – Time Yourself

Lastly, keep in mind is that when working for a haunted house, you’ll be working alongside other makeup artists, too. A big team is required in order to transform over 30 actors in just a few hours. With that being said, you’ll have to create a completed look in 20 minutes – max!

Something that I found helpful was to use friends and family to practice this on. I’d give myself 20 minutes to see what I was able to create in that timeframe. This also gave me the opportunity to ask myself, “How can I create this same effect – but faster?”

These kinds of makeup jobs also teach you how to prioritize and better plan out your steps when applying makeup. For example, I’d first begin by using latex and cotton on my actor, so I could create a slash or open wound. While the actor is using a blow dryer (always on the cool setting to protect their skin) to dry the latex and cotton mixture, I would then begin applying makeup to their arms, neck, or other exposed areas. Thus, allowing me to create one uniform look without wasting any time!

Practice creating simple cuts, bruises, and small latex and cotton mixtures on your own time. This prep work will help make your looks more realistic! The end result will be that even the tiniest details stand out just as much as the bigger wounds or prosthetics you apply.

4 Ways My Makeup Artist Certification Has Helped Me Succeed in the Industry

By Education, From the Experts, Your Makeup Career No Comments

Gabrielle Rivera is a QC Makeup Academy graduate and professional makeup artist. To see more of her work, visit her Instagram here.

With YouTube and social media being an immediate source of information, many people might think: “I don’t really need a makeup artist certification. I can just learn from watching videos.”

Although information is easily accessible today, does it necessarily mean that you’re learning the correct information? How can you even be certain that you’re learning from a skilled industry professional?

I myself have learned a lot from watching makeup artists on YouTube. But there are certain things that influencers won’t disclose, explain, or possibly have knowledge of when it comes to a professional makeup business.

For instance, these social media artists mostly apply makeup on themselves, rather than on models. Not to mention, they generally stick with trendy techniques that are popular at that time. You won’t really learn anything about classic technique or makeup theory – both of which are essential if you want to turn this into a career.

If you only learn from influencers or are self-taught, I ask you:

  • What about Special Effects makeup?
  • Don’t you want to know how to do makeup for film, television, and/or live theater?
  • What if you encounter a client with mature skin?
  • Do you know how to properly apply makeup on a man?

These are questions to consider when debating if a makeup artist certification is right for you. Here’s my insight as a professional…

4 ways that my makeup artist certification has benefited MY professional career:

1 – Being Seen as a Professional

The beauty industry is a highly saturated field. In order to see your business flourish, you have to be seen and acknowledged – not just as an artist, but as a professional. After all, you want others to take you seriously. If your fellow industry pros acknowledge your proficiency, a lot more opportunities will open up for your business.

With a makeup artist certification, such as the kind you can earn from QC Makeup Academy, you’re learning the side of becoming an MUA that goes far beyond makeup application. When I was earning my own certification, I found that I was able to study and apply business techniques in a real-world setting!

Once potential clients see that you have obtained a legitimate makeup artist certification, they’ll understand that you take your career seriously. Your certification is proof that you took the time to learn more about your craft, and dedicated yourself to providing clientele with the best possible services.

Now, here’s a fun little fact for you: not only does a makeup artist certification help you with clients, it can also help you save money! After graduating from QC Makeup Academy, I was able to apply as a professional MUA for certain online retailers (such as Urban Decay, Sigma, and MAC – just to name a few).

There, I could shop for products at a discounted price! This helps me to regularly restock and build up my professional kit without breaking the bank. I’d definitely call that a great advantage!

2 – Becoming a Legitimate Business

If this is your first time starting your own business, legitimizing it can be a step that often overwhelms and confuses the best of us. However, the right school will ensure you’re properly prepared as you earn your makeup artist certification. In QC Makeup Academy’s courses, for example, you’re provided with an entire unit devoted to Business education.

The Business unit of my certification is one that I valued the most. With that unit, I learned:

  • Marketing and promotion techniques
  • Tips on working with potential clients
  • How to “Seal the Deal” on reluctant clients
  • Creating professional contracts
  • And so much more!

Although QC’s Business units are technically “optional”, I strongly recommend you take advantage of them. They’re a key component to you knowing how to make your future business legitimate, and run it properly.

As a professional MUA, the skills and tips learned through my makeup artist certification have truly helped me to sell, market, and grow my business. For starters, I’ve had many clients express to me that the professional contracts I’ve developed have set me apart from other makeup artists they’ve worked with in the past!

Likewise, I’ve been able to easily apply the knowledge learned through my course in order to register my business, update my business kit with essentials, and map out financing and bookkeeping for my business.

3 – Contracts and Pricing

One of the biggest challenges you may face as a new artist, or even an experienced one, is setting prices. Something we’ve all experienced when dealing with potential clients is hearing, “Wow, your prices are high,” or, “I know someone who will do it cheaper.”

But you’ve worked hard to obtain your makeup artist certification, and what sets you apart is that you do have proper business training! So, don’t worry. You’ll be able to promote yourself effectively to clients like these in a professional way; one that helps them understand just how valuable your services are.

Obtaining a makeup artist certification allows you to market yourself as a true industry expert who has put the time, training, and research into your craft. This can help you to determine your pricing accordingly, in order to reflect that.

Additionally, make sure that with each client, you always have a professional, written contract. This contract should include your set pricing, policies, and any other critical information relevant to your business and services. A strong contract will provide your client with a sense of comfort; they’ll be able to see that you uphold your business and professionalism to a high standard.

Plus, contracts also protect you and your business when dealing with clients. They’re also a great resource to help you maintain your bookkeeping and business records!

4 – My Clients

Lastly, but just as importantly, you can learn ALL about your clients through a makeup artist certification course.

Clients are the foundation of your business! Knowing how to properly apply makeup to all skin types, face shapes, eye shapes, and for specific platforms is all going to make your business stand out from the rest.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, social media can be a great place to learn about techniques and products. However, it also limits you to what’s popular or mainstream – which may not be techniques you can apply for all clients or settings. Social media won’t teach you:

  • Which products to use for different skin types and textures
  • Makeup theory and foundational techniques
  • How to apply makeup for film and television, versus makeup for photography, or makeup for theater
  • Etc.

These are all skills you need to have in order to best service your future clients! The more you limit yourself, the more you’ll limit the number of clients you can offer your services to.

If you want to invest in your career and your business, I would highly recommend enrolling in a professional course and getting a makeup artist certification. Personally, I strongly recommend the Master Makeup Artistry Course offered at QC Makeup Academy (which is the course I took)!

The insight learned from this course has set me apart from my peers. Even more than that, it taught me how to become a better boss, a better businesswomen, and a better makeup artist overall.
