Now that the year is ending, it’s time for us to look back on our beauty habits and decide if we’re heading in the right direction or if we really need to get back in the beauty game.
These resolutions aren’t all about beauty secrets and complex techniques to keep you looking your best. We’re focusing on the basic steps that should be in every beauty routine—and they’re all quite simple! Some of these especially important for new makeup artists! We’re done making excuses for our bad beauty habits, and you should be too. Find out how you can reinvent your beauty regime, both for yourself and your makeup clients!
1. Post makeup tutorials
As a professional makeup artist, one way to boost your business in 2017 is by posting your own makeup tutorials so clients can see you in action. Whether it’s on Facebook, your own beauty blog, or YouTube, uploading a few tutorials can bring in more makeup clients in the New Year. By showing off your hands-on expertise, you’ll market yourself in a new light. Let them check out your skills online!
Also, it’s pretty fun to play the video back and see how awesome you are at applying makeup. Good thing you rocked your makeup artist certification! It’s a great confidence boost to see your own talents on screen, so keep it up.
2. Clean our brushes at least once a week
We know makeup artists have to keep their makeup kits clean and sanitized for every client, but what about the rest of us? We’ll admit that there have been (multiple) occasions where we put off giving our makeup brushes a proper wash. Whether we’re tired, too busy, or just plain lazy, it happens to the best of us.
So let’s make a promise: we need to clean our makeup brushes at least once a week (depending on how much you wear, of course). And to the pro MUA’s out there, please remind us how important this is! We don’t want any bacteria going back on our faces! Being called out for it might give us the inspiration we need to stay on track!
3. Wear bold lips
The bold lip trend has been gaining momentum throughout 2016, and it’s not dying out just yet! Bold lips are a continuing trend in the beauty industry—from bright red, to dark purple, to coral—and it’s time to embrace it.
We know it can be a struggle to wear bold lipstick on busy days. You don’t want to worry about reapplying or having it crease (which is the absolute WORST). But, with new long-wearing products on the market today these worries are being wiped away (unlike your lipstick, wink wink). Try out the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Black Cherry or Brick Red. One application and you won’t have to worry for the rest of the day!
4. Stop stressing over our complexions
You know how it goes—the minute we feel a blemish coming on we begin to stress, which then makes us breakout even more. It’s a vicious cycle, isn’t it?
It’s time we all hang up our insecurities and decided that, spots or no spots, we’re not going to worry about them anymore. Well, at least not as much as we have in the past! A breakout has the power to ruin your day. Quite frankly, it’s not worth stressing so much over something so little. It will be gone in no time anyways! So you can keep doing your regular spot treatments (because we know blemishes are hard to ignore) but don’t let them bring your mood down!
5. Go au naturel more often
And on that note, let’s discuss the benefits of going barefaced more often. We know makeup isn’t good for our skin. We need to let our skin breathe, and the best way to do that is to skip face makeup altogether. It will do wonders for your skin, both inside and out, and you’ll be surprised how confident you feel once you forget you’re not wearing any foundation!
So 2017 is the perfect time to start facing the world without a full face of makeup every day. It’s almost like we’re letting our guard down, and it will do us all good in the long run!
Pro Tip: As a professional makeup artist, you’ll want to demonstrate your makeup skills by wearing appropriate makeup when meeting clients. A light makeup application will show your talent and keep you looking natural!
6. Give up on old makeup
There’s always that one product that we’re OBSESSED with. Even when it has run its course, we still try to squeeze every last use out of it. A resolution for the New Year: stop holding on to old makeup. Just buy yourself a new one already.
7. Start a proper skincare routine
If you haven’t started to yet, you need to look after your skin properly. Treating your face and body to a good skincare routine will improve how you look and feel about yourself. Taking care of our bodies is extremely important, so for 2017 let’s make this top priority!
Consider what you put into your body and what you put on your body. Everything has an effect on your skin! A good skincare routine will cleanse, tone, and moisturize the skin with good quality products. Yes, it’s time to start using dermatologist-recommended brands (even if you have perfect skin). Treat yourself to a face mask once a week to keep your skin in good condition. And keep track of how much water you’re drinking—remember to stay hydrated!
8. Take off our makeup every night
Make sure you add this one to your new skincare routine. Taking off your makeup before bed is an absolute must. There is so much damage that can be done by wearing makeup to bed (ageing and clogged pores, for starters). Counteract that by washing your face before bed—even a makeup wipe is better than nothing! But we really need to start taking this seriously. And on your busiest nights, just a quick 30 second wash before bed will keep your skin looking healthy!
Think you can stick to these beauty resolutions? You’ll be thankful that you’ve taken such good care of yourself and your skin. And you don’t even need an over-complicated beauty routine. Investing a few minutes a day will give you incredible skin benefits. If we can do it, so can you!
Thanks Katie! I needed my toes stepped on with a few of these.
